Omega-3 is an essential nutrient

Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fat an important for our body and brain. These are essential nutrients as our body do not synthesize Omega-3 by itself, they should ingested in diet. The three main omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods, such as fish and flaxseed, and in dietary supplements, such as fish oil.

Physiological importance of Omega-3

Being structural component of cell membrane which covers each and every cell of our body, they are involved in many physiological processes and affect functions of cell receptors which remains embedded in cell membrane. Omega-3 also serve as starting material for synthesis of many hormones which regulates contraction, relaxation, inflammation and blood clotting and many more. Omega-3 also plays significant role in preventing vision impairment, and blindness.  As Omega-3 is associated with brain function and development, it act as preventive measure in various brain related problems such as Memory loss, anxiety, depression and anxiety.

Various researche’s shows beneficial results of EPA and DHA, to cure several forms of depression, like depression in different age groups, postpartum depression, bipolar depression and other minor and major forms of depression. The result have its strength as the placebo showed neutral effect while Omega-3 showed curative effect on depression.

Inflammation is a part of  defence mechanism of our body, by which our body fights with infectious agents or foreign agents. Omega-3 reduces inflammation by reducing the substances produced during the process of inflammation like cytokinins, and eicosanoids.
